Arrium has committed itself to becoming world class in safety, which means to lift our safety performance to levels of internationally recognised standards. This involves building the capability of our leaders, fully embracing our safety principles, improving engagement with our workforce and stakeholders, and adopting a leadership approach that builds a strong and enduring safety culture of interdependency.
This commitment means we continually engage with a diverse range of international organisations to adequately resource our teams with the right tools and best practices.
In 2015, 45 of our senior leaders capitalised on an opportunity to experience safety excellence in the United States with DuPont Sustainable Solutions, as well as learning from leadership thought-leaders at Harvard University.
Benchmarking with DuPont Sustainable Solutions in particular, reinforced the strength of Arrium’s safety principles and systems, and identified areas where we can make our approach even better. The senior leaders returned to share the approaches, behaviours and skills they experienced with their own teams, establishing a culture of Felt Leadership reaching across the entire organisation.
Swear by Safety
The DuPont USA visit was a catalyst for the ‘Swear by Safety’ campaign created by our Mining and Steel teams in Whyalla, South Australia.
Swear By Safety is a comprehensive cultural change process to shift belief around achieving Goal Zero and injury prevention behaviours at our mining and steel business as well as the broader community in Whyalla, South Australia.
The campaign was well supported with unique and appealing materials through multimedia including TV, radio, print advertisements and social media.
Overall, 800 people within the workplace and community took the ‘Swear By Safety’ oath, including the local mayor. This recognition highlights the breadth and depth of world class work being done in safety across Arrium.

This campaign is a shining example of Arrium’s commitment to world class safety, and not only has this initiative received the highest award at the 2015 Arrium Safety Excellence Awards, it also recently received international acknowledgement as part of the World Steel Association’s safety recognition program.
World Steel Organisation Finalists
Swear By Safety was recognised by The World Steel Association (worldsteel) at their 2015 annual conference as demonstrating excellence in a safety and health recognition programme.
Arrium’s Chief Executive Steel Steve Hamer (above, third from right) accepted the award on behalf of Arrium and the Swear By Safety team.
Arrium was one of six companies recognised for demonstrating a commitment to safety and health that fulfilled three key criteria:
worldsteel’s Chairman for 2014/2016, Wolfgang Eder said: “We are very proud of the companies recognised this year for the improvement they have made for their employees, but also the positive impact they have made on the industry. There is no better way to improve safety performance than sharing the knowledge and experiences among peers.”
