Benefiting from diversity
We believe that there is strength in diversity, and what sets us apart as individuals makes us stronger as a team. We are focused on diversity in three specific areas: diversity of thinking; gender diversity and cultural diversity.
Current diversity initiatives include:
Developing our people
Arrium’s people development efforts are focused on ensuring that we build and sustain the capabilities critical to our success across our varied industries and markets. We also invest in ensuring our employees have the skills to work safely, as well as growing our leaders to create an environment where people can be their best.
Our businesses and regions provide a range of learning initiatives for employees at all levels. These include programs such as Leading People to Safety, Regional Manager Development, Coaching the Arrium Way and Value Based Selling, as well as mentoring, study support, exposure to senior leaders, stretch projects and secondments.

Significant Investment in the Whyalla Steelworks
One example of our people working together is the the multi-million dollar upgrade of
the OneSteel Whyalla Steelworks’ Reheat Furnace, which was completed this year. According to General Manager Whyalla Steelworks, Theuns Victor, the aim of the project is to significantly reduce the energy consumption of the 41-year-old furnace, as well as automating many of its systems and reducing downtime through a modern redesign.
“This upgrade demonstrates our commitment to the Whyalla Steelworks,” Mr Victor said.
“It’s a key element in our continual improvement program, whereby we are constantly implementing initiatives to reduce our environmental impact. The upgrade will improve the efficiency of our operation by lowering gas consumption, which in turn will reduce our carbon footprint.”
